Andrew Backs New Industrial Strategy for Local Growth

Andrew Gwynne MP Welcomes Government’s Industrial Strategy to Drive Growth in Gorton and Denton

Landmark plan cuts energy costs for manufacturers, boosts skills investment, and aims to double business investment to £240 billion by 2035

GORTON & DENTON, UK — 24 June 2025 — The UK Government has today unveiled its Modern Industrial Strategy, a transformative 10-year plan aimed at removing barriers to business growth, attracting investment, and strengthening the UK’s position as a global leader in industry and innovation.

The strategy includes a 25% reduction in energy prices for eligible manufacturers, aligning UK industrial energy costs with European counterparts. It also outlines significant reforms to the skills system and pledges over £20 billion in R&D investment, supporting high-growth sectors such as Advanced Manufacturing.

The announcement has been welcomed by Andrew Gwynne, Member of Parliament for Gorton and Denton, who described the strategy as a "game-changer" for local businesses and communities.

“By cutting energy costs and unlocking new investment opportunities, this strategy will help businesses across Gorton and Denton grow, create skilled jobs, and drive long-term economic growth,” said Mr Gwynne.

Strategic Measures Announced:

  • 25% reduction in electricity prices for thousands of energy-intensive manufacturers

  • Over £20 billion committed to research and development in growth sectors

  • Expansion of access to business finance through the British Business Bank and National Wealth Fund

  • Comprehensive skills reform focusing on digital, engineering, and defence sectors

  • Streamlining of regulatory frameworks, cutting red tape and fast-tracking major planning applications

  • Target to double annual business investment in growth sectors to £240 billion by 2035

Local Relevance:

The strategy holds significant implications for the North West, particularly in Advanced Manufacturing, a sector that supports over 335,000 jobs in the region. Gwynne pointed to Denton-based Wienerberger, a leading brick manufacturer, as a key local beneficiary of the energy reforms:

“Brick production is inherently energy-intensive, but Wienerberger is also at the forefront of low-emission manufacturing. This new energy pricing framework will accelerate its sustainability ambitions while safeguarding skilled jobs in our community.”

Mr Gwynne also praised the strategy’s alignment with Labour’s broader economic vision:

“This is a clear demonstration that Labour is delivering on its Plan for Change—providing stability, boosting productivity, and creating the conditions for long-term industrial success.”

Government Perspective:

Jonathan Reynolds MP, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, highlighted the strategy’s role in restoring business confidence:

“From day one, we’ve made it clear: Britain is back in business. This Industrial Strategy lays the foundation for sustainable economic growth, supports working people, and ensures the UK remains the most attractive destination for global investment.”

“It will deliver growth that puts more money in people’s pockets and supports the services that matter—our NHS, our schools, and our national defence.”

About the Modern Industrial Strategy

The strategy is built around a long-term vision to make doing business in the UK quicker, easier, and more cost-effective, giving firms the confidence to invest, expand and hire. By targeting eight key sectors and enabling structural reform, it is projected to create over 1.1 million new, high-quality jobs nationwide.
